Arizona's coal ash ponds

Arizona's two coal ash ponds are at the Apache Generating Station in Cochise County [right. credit, AEPCO], with 33,000 tons in storage, and the Cholla Power Plant in Navajo County with 258,000 tons according to news reports following the AP story about the number of ash ponds around the U.S.

The former site is owned by Arizona Electric Power Cooperative Inc. and the latter by Arizona Public Service Co.

Interest in ash ponds is high nationwide after the failure of a large facility in Tennessee.

AEPCO says "high quality fly ash is a valuable component in the formulation of high strength concrete, plastic piping and other construction products. AEPCO typically sells 60-to-80 percent of its fly ash each year to a specialized 'combustion products' marketer, who collects the ash at a facility adjacent to the power plant."

Inasmuch as the ash pond at Cholla Power Plant in Navajo County would flow to the Little Colorado River and then to the Grand Canyon National Park, which state agency monitors the safety of the ash pond?
