Copper mining company Curis Resources has announced the inaugural year of the Florence Copper Creating Opportunities Scholarship program, offering scholarships at the local high school level and college level. The $10,000 in scholarship funds will be awarded annually to students seeking a career in Science, Engineering, Environment, Sustainability, Technology and Innovation, starting in the upcoming 2012-2013 school year. In addition to the standard scholarship application, Curis would also like students to demonstrate their vision and innovation by answering the question “Why is Copper Important?” through the submission of a two-minute video in which they answer this question. Scholarships will be awarded based on academic achievement, leadership capabilities, achievements at school, in the community or in personal activities and by recommendations from teachers and school faculty.
The scholarship for high school students awards one student at each area high school, Florence High School and Poston Butte High School, a one-year $2,500 grant, which will be applicable to an accredited two- or four-year college, university, business or trade-based school in Arizona. The college-level scholarship, a one-year $5,000 grant, is available to currently enrolled students at Central Arizona College. Both scholarships are renewable and recipients will be gifted an iPad to provide them with an additional tool to further the student’s education.I
Students interested in applying for a scholarship have until Wednesday, April 18, 2012 to submit their applications. Applications are available through the high school guidance counselor or the college financial aid office, via email request to social@curisresources.com
